It is amazing the power you get when you integrate your BigCommerce store into your WordPress site.
Recently in a podcast we talked with BigCommerce about their newest plugin that allows you to easily integrate your online store into a WordPress site. Needless to say, I was impressed by what I had heard.
Since then I have created a demo site on BigCommerce so I could get a better feel of the platform. As I explored it more, I came to two simple conclusions:

- This bring the power of WordPress to BigCommerce store owners.
Now these are general statements, and I’ll be writing more posts that dive deeper into them. In fact, I will want to share with you more of the inner-workings of BigCommerce itself.
But what I’ll do here is show you how this plugin works—and what it brings to your WordPress site. Watch as I integrate a store of 21 products from BigCommerce to WordPress.
A Look at WordPress / BigCommerce Integration
When I installed the SHORTCODE ERROR: ThirstyAffiliates did not detect a valid link id, please check your short code! all I had to do was activate, connect to my BigCommerce account and choose the channel. In BigCommerce, your WordPress site is treated like a channel, as if you are selling externally on Amazon, eBay, etc. The benefit of a channel is that you can choose either all of your products or just a select few from your BigCommerce store on your WordPress site.
This is huge for BigCommerce store owners because it allows you to create niche sites for select products, taking advantage of the power of WordPress. For example, if you launch an online course site on WordPress, you can select specific products from your BigCommerce online store to be available for your students/members to purchase, even at a discount.
For an online store of 21 products, it took between 1-2 minutes to import everything, including images, prices, categories, etc.
Settings for BigCommerce on your WordPress Site
A lot of your information will be setup and can only be changed on your BigCommerce site. But there are settings you will have to use specifically for your WordPress site around your BigCommerce products, as well as some other control over product pages, etc. This gives you a good idea of what can be done on your WordPress site vs. your BigCommerce dashboard.
Here are the basic settings.
In the next few screenshots, you’ll see the options for those settings.
Product Sync – You will want your products synced and kept up-to-date on your WordPress site. Depending on your online store, you can have this synced from from every few minutes up to a month. You can choose to have all new products on your BigCommerce store synced with your site, or only the products you choose.
Cart & Checkout – Aside from choosing your cart and checkout page here, you also have the option of either embedding the checkout on your WordPress site or redirecting customers to BigCommerce. If you do embed, your site will need an SSL certificate.
Gift Certificate Settings – Your gift certificates will be created and managed on your BigCommerce dashboard This setting allows you to assign a page on your WordPress site that will enable customers to purchase gift certificates.
Currency Settings – Allows you to set how your prices will be displayed on your WordPress site (if you would rather have them different than your BigCommerce currency settings).
Accounts and Registrations – Primarily settings to assign the pages.
Analytics Settings – The option to connect either or both Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics.
Product Reviews – The option to moderate and manage reviews in WordPress is not available yet, but will be incorporated in a future development.
API Credentials – To be used for specific apps or integrations.
Channel – As I mentioned in the video, your WordPress site is now a channel for your BigCommerce store. This is where you will find the channel name:
Diagnostics – Lastly, in the settings a couple of options for diagnostics:
When you import your products, you can have all of them show on your WordPress site, and you can hide any of them as well. This gives you the ability to create niche sites from your BigCommerce store on WordPress.
Once those products are imported, you will find them all listed here with the options for each product.
Editing Your Product
You can open the product page on your WordPress site by clicking edit. As you can see below, it appears as a regular post or page, but is essentially a custom post type.
But you need to understand a couple of things:
- The title and description that shows is not editable in WordPress, although it appears to be. If you were to edit this, and save, since this information is stored on BigCommerce, you would lose your edits. You will need to make those changes in your BigCommerce dashboard.
- You can add other blocks to this page. For example, if you want to add additional content, videos, etc, you can do that by simply adding a block to the page and it will appear after the product.
If we look at the product page on the frontend, you can see how great it looks. Again, all of the information you see here is pulling in from BigCommerce and none of it is editable on WordPress.
Of course, how your product looks here will depend on your theme and its styling. (BTW, I am using the Genesis child theme SHORTCODE ERROR: ThirstyAffiliates did not detect a valid link id, please check your short code! for my demo)
As I showed previously, you have two options for checkout, using your BigCommerce checkout page or embedding it on your WordPress site. To do the latter, you will need an SSL certificate. And as you can see here, this is what the checkout page looks like embedded.
BigCommerce Blocks for WordPress
There are some BigCommerce-specific widgets you can add to any page or post as a block. These are mostly based on account page information.
Then, there is the block for products:
When I add the products block, it automatically pulls in all products.
If I click on Edit Products, I now have the chance to filter what products show by Recent, On Sale, Brands and Categories. There are also display settings to set the number of products per page and the products order.
Well, that is a condensed overview of the import process as well as a glance at the integration with WordPress. I can imagine that the features here will grow over time, as we are still in the early stages. And there is a lot to discover about BigCommerce on your own platform.
